What's In A Name?

When I was starting my letterpress greeting card business I wanted to differentiate from my freelance graphic design name, Mollie Joy Design.

I wanted something that was warm and friendly like a greeting card. I’m also from the south and have lived here my whole life; strangers speak to strangers, you get to know your neighbors, you make smalltalk with the cashiers at Publix. That’s the kind of warmth I wanted to make with my cards and brand.

I was going through different word combinations and going back and forth when one day my husband and I were walking the dogs in our neighborhood and the driver of a passing car waved at us enthusiastically. My husband turned to me and said, “Who was that?” I said, “I don’t know but they waved big.” 

*Light bulb moment*

That moment and that saying felt so southern and friendly and right.

So that’s how Big Wave became the name of my letterpress business. I hope to bring you connection, warmth, and good feelings like a big friendly wave.
